Public Schools, Privates Schools, and Higher Education in Baldwin County

Public Schools

Milledgeville values high quality public education. The Baldwin County school district offers a wide variety of educational opportunities from the state of the art Performing Arts Center to the Baldwin County Career Academy. Baldwin County Schools, a public education system for city and county residents, has four elementary schools, one middle school and a comprehensive high school. Baldwin High School is a SACS accredited, offering a college preparatory diploma program with career/technology concentrations and fine arts endorsement options for its 1,400 students. The school’s Ninth Grade Academy assists freshmen as they make the transition from middle to high school by focusing on academics within a ninth grade setting. Baldwin High offers students the opportunity to experience college-level coursework while remaining at the high school campus though Advanced Placement courses. Students may elect to participate in joint enrollment programs with the area’s postsecondary educational institutions, allowing them to earn high school and college credits simultaneously. A strong and innovative career/technology program provides opportunities for participation in industry certified programs, internships and co-ops. Like the traditional academic joint enrollment program, career tech students may earn high school and college credits though joint/dual enrollment with one of Georgia’s technical colleges. For students with strong interests in the performing and fine arts, a diploma endorsement in fine arts is available to enhance their development.

Private Schools

John Milledge Academy’s mission is to partner with parents to develop the abilities and interests of every student through challenging curricula and extracurricular opportunities that focus on critical and creative thinking, strong communication skills, leadership and team development, lifelong learning, and service to others. Parents understand that school choice is one of the most important decisions that they can make. John Milledge Academy is proud of its passion, dedication and commitment to providing an exceptionally high quality, college preparatory education. We want JMA to be the leading choice in Middle Georgia. At John Milledge we are not just a school, we are an educational experience. We believe in a family-centered environment for learning where students are known and cared for, where students are challenged to reach their greatest potential, and where students receive the individual attention which is so important to their character and academic development. JMA believes in a balanced educational experience. Our focus on academics shows that educating students at the highest level is our top priority. We recognize that athletics is a great way to build a student’s self-esteem and to show the importance of teamwork. A commitment to the Fine Arts ensures that our well-rounded students experience areas such as music, dance, and theater. Ultimately, active service instills in each student the importance of serving others and giving back to our community.

GMC Prep School is focused on “developing the intellect and elevating the character” of the students we serve.  GMC Prep has held true to the same mission since its inception in 1879 and defines “student success” as graduating educated, contributing citizens who possess both the academic skills and character traits needed to be successful at their chosen college/university and in life. The fact that our purpose has sustained and guided us for over 135 years provides evidence that parents, students, and faculty continue to choose our school precisely for the very reason we exist.  Our stakeholders choose GMC Prep School because they understand, support, and believe in our version of “student success.”

Since its establishment in 1879, Georgia Military College (GMC) has been a recognized leader providing a character-based higher education, improving students’ personal well-being and giving them hope for a brighter future.  This is evident in its enrollment during this last decade as GMC has experienced unprecedented growth in their number of students. Under the leadership of former GMC President, Major General Peter Boylan (1992-2013), and current GMC President, Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell, IV (2013-present), the college has grown not only its program offerings, but has expanded its campus footprint across the state, and seen significant increase in enrollments of the Global Online Campus. As a result, The Chronicle of Higher Education recognized Georgia Military College as the 18th Fastest Growing Associate and Baccalaureate/Associate College in the Nation, 2007-2017. Based on that ranking, GMC is also the #1 fastest growing public institution in the state of Georgia. In addition to offering Bachelor of Applied Science degree programs, GMC has transfer agreements with 48 four-year colleges and universities so that if desired, any GMC student can continue their education at another school with ease. The education GMC affords students demonstrates the value GMC adds to the higher education environment in Georgia, and beyond.
